Watsucker Urban Farm
Cultivating community and empowering lives through urban farming in mid-town Greensboro, NC
A working urban garden and farm project on W. Wendover Avenue, where individuals with learning differences build real job skills and life skills: planting seeds, tending garden beds, baking sourdough, sewing, building webpages, and creating handmade crafts alongside neighbors and friends.
Our Mission
Watsucker Urban Farm was founded by Joy Watson, a former Special Education teacher with Guilford County Schools and now the Broker-in-Charge of Joy Watson Real Estate. Her years in the classroom inspired a simple goal: bring joy and independence to individuals with learning differences through job and life-skills training opportunities.
We are dedicated to creating meaningful connections and fostering growth in the Greensboro and Piedmont Triad communities we serve, while promoting sustainable living and community empowerment. Come visit us!
What Happens at the Farm
Watsucker Urban Farm operates as an apprenticeship connected to North Carolina's Occupational Course of Study (OCS) pathway, linking students to real work at our W. Wendover Avenue properties. Apprentices practice the skills that lead to independence and employment:

Gardening & the Coop
Seasonal planting from seed trays to harvest, plus collecting eggs from the chicken coop, with fresh food grown right in the neighborhood.

Sourdough Baking & Cooking
From sourdough loaves and English muffins to waffles, cinnamon rolls, and apple pie, apprentices build kitchen skills they keep for life.

Sewing & Domestic Arts
Sewing, folding linens, household organization, and the everyday domestic arts that turn a house into a home.

Handmade Crafts
Small projects that build fine motor skills, patience, and pride in finished work.

Technology & Web Skills
Graphic design in Canva, blog editing, video editing, and 3D modeling, real digital skills for the modern workplace.

Caring for Spaces
Tending garden beds, tools, and outdoor spaces, the everyday upkeep that keeps a property beautiful.
And it works: our team today includes a former OCS student who first came to Watsucker Urban Farm as a high school apprentice and now works with us.
See the apprenticeship in action, with photos of students at work, in our post on the Occupational Course of Study, built by Josiah, one of our apprentices, while learning webpage skills.
